CONSCIENCE RIGHTS AND CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN THE WORKPLACE:
A CATHOLIC RESPONSE TO EUTHANASIA AND ASSISTED DEATH

A Seminar for Nurses and All Healthcare Professionals

SUMMARY:    Nurses and other healthcare professionals may increasingly face ethical situations at work in which, in conscience, they cannot participate.

How does the healthcare professional proceed in such circumstances?

Can the healthcare professional simultaneously maintain the regulatory body’s standards of practice and uphold integrity of conscience?

Which are the best ways of informing your manager and colleagues about your conscientious objection before a situation arises?

What interventions should be avoided to prevent participation on the basis of conscience?

What resources are available from CCBI and other organizations?

In this seminar, an interdisciplinary panel of speakers will address these concerns. There will be an extended question and answer period for all to benefit from the experiences raised for discussion.

Other considerations:

  • The impact of euthanasia in the work environment on healthcare professionals
  • The difference between pain relief that relieves suffering and pain relief that hastens death
  • Interactions between the patient and healthcare provider that allow for understanding the meaning of illness and suffering
